“Again the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and he gave them a deliverer—Ehud, a left-handed man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Ehud had made a double-edged sword about a foot and a half long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing. He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab,…. After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way the men who had carried it. At the idols near Gilgal he himself turned back and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his summer palace and said, “I have a message from God for you.” As the king rose from his seat, Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword from his right thigh and plunged it into the king’s belly. Even the handle sank in after the blade, which came out his back. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it.” Judges 3:15-22
Ehud: A fearless leader, man of vision, and a RADICAL DELIVERER.
It’s easy to read about the Israelite’s journey through out the Old Testament and think to our selves “These people were so stupid! Why didn’t they learn the first time?” The reality is you (myself included) have much in common with the Israelite’s. The Israelite’s were quick to cry out to God in their time of need, unfortunately they were also quick to forget about the Lord’s goodness and greatness when the storms passed. Sound familiar? You and I do the exact same thing in our own lives.
Two things we learn from Ehud, A Deliverer:
- You need a deliverer that fights for you and works in you. The Israelite’s needed Ehud to radically deliver them from King Eglon. You need Jesus Christ to radically deliver you from your sin. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, he has delivered you and continues to deliver you. The problem is, there is an area of your life that you have been delivered from, but (like the Israelites) you live as though you have not been delivered. I’m not sure what that area is for you. You have to identify it. Remember, your deliverer has delivered you and his Holy Spirit lives in you. It is up to you to call upon the Holy Spirit in times of weakness and convert his power into strength flowing through your life. Just like Ehud delivered his people as he pierced Eglon’s belly with his sword, Jesus Christ defeated sin and death when he radically went to the cross. He died to set you free from sin. Don’t turn back. Live free!
- The Deliverer Desires to Work Through You. Not only was Ehud a deliverer, he made a choice to allow God to work through him, and serve God’s purpose in his generation. Many Christians want the “deliverance” Christ provides, but don’t want to serve and live for the deliverer. That’s called selfishness. Christ has called us to selflessness. When you live a selfless life the deliverer (Jesus Christ) works through you.
Be Delivered, Live Delivered, and Allow the Deliverer to Work Through You.
